SWAP- School to Work Alliance Program

About

The SWAP (School to Work Alliance Program) in Colorado helps young adults (15-24) with mild to moderate disabilities transition from school to competitive employment by offering career exploration, job skills training (resumes, interviews), job coaching, and job placement, in partnership with the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and local districts. For Buena Vista, you'd likely connect through the local school district (like Salida or Lake County Schools in the surrounding area), a local BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services), or directly with the Pikes Peak BOCES SWAP program or a DVR counselor to get started with services like career assessments, job readiness, and job placement support.

What SWAP Offers:

  • Career Development: Interest inventories, career exploration, and guidance.
  • Job Readiness: Resume writing, interview skills, job searching, and workplace etiquette.
  • Work Experience: Job coaching, workplace tours, and real-world experience.
  • Support: Mentorship, adaptive technology, and a one-year follow-up after job placement.

Who is Eligible:

  • Youth ages 15-24.
  • Students with a 504 Plan, IEP, or a suspected disability.
  • Those with mild to moderate employment barriers (learning, physical, emotional disabilities).
  • A strong desire to work and commitment to program activities.

How to Get Involved (Buena Vista Area):

  1. Contact Your School: Speak with your Special Education case manager or transition coordinator about getting referred.
  2. Reach Out to DVR: Connect with a Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation counselor.
