The “Two Roots” are the foundation of Traditional East Asian medicine theory - the cycles of Yin and Yang. We see these two forces alternately ebbing and flowing in nature and within our bodies, in every moment and in everything. Our understanding of all things can be observed through the lens of this relationship and this integral duality that make up an inseparable wholeness. The Chinese call these two forces Yin and Yang, and we call them Two Roots. They are two parts of one whole - one tree - neither can exist without the other: “as above, so below”. Throughout the seasons of the year, in the monthly sun and moon cycles, in day and night, and in each moment these two forces are dancing. In our breath and our heartbeats, we can see yin and yang naturally creating balance and harmony - allowing us to inhale and exhale, contract and relax. In Traditional East Asian Medicine we know that observing the state of these two forces is the foundation of understanding health and how that looks for each individual. In turn, it allows us to diagnose and treat disharmony that can lead to disease, pain, and stagnation by treating the root(s) of the problem.
